2025 Youth Age Category Changes

At the 2024 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) General Assembly in Santiago, Chile, the IFSC and its members approved changes to the Youth age categories, effective in 2025. As a result, Sport Climbing Australia (SCA) and Sport Climbing Victoria (SCVIC) will implement these new age categories during the 2025 competition season, including the 2025 SCVIC Youth State Titles and 2025 SCA Australian Youth Championships.

The changes stem from the 2023 IFSC Assembly decision to raise the Senior World Cup eligibility from 16 to 17, aiming to protect young athletes from performance pressure and injury risks. This shift will likely extend to 18 in the future. As a result, the IFSC also decided to adjust youth categories by one year, ensuring a safer competition environment for developing athletes.

The main impact on athletes is that they will effectively spend a third year in their current age category as the shift progresses. While this may be frustrating for some, the priority is the safety and well-being of young athletes.

SCVIC and SCA will run the Junior division for one final year; however, Juniors will only compete for a national title and will not be selected for the World Youth Championships (WYCH).

Starting in 2025, the World Youth Championships will include only the Youth A and Youth B categories, with the Junior category removed to better manage the event’s size.
