After a long wait, the news we have all been waiting for has come through. On 15 June, 2018 the Australian Olympic Committee announced the addition of Ned Middlehurst to the Australian Youth Olympic Team making history as the first Sport Climber competing as part of the Youth Olympic Game programme.
Sport Climbing Victoria caught up with Middlehurst on his selection:
“I’m very happy to have been given the opportunity to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. It has been a long wait since mid-October last year when I qualified for the spot in Noumea by winning the Combined event at the Oceania Championships, but I would say it’s been worth the wait!
“It will be really cool to compete against some of the strongest Juniors from around the world too, as only the best from each region get to go.
“It’s going to be really different from World Youth Championships as it won’t be a huge category so I’ll get to know my competitors really well. I’ll also be taking Will Hammersla as my coach and trainer for the duration of the comp so it’s going to awesome!”
Middlehurst will head to Buenos Aires to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 6 – 18 October, 2018 with climbing being held from 7-10 October, 2018.
