2015 Australian Boulder Climbing Championships

Sport Climbing Victoria, in collaboration with Sport Climbing Australia, is pleased to announce that the 2015 Australian Boulder Climbing Championships will be held in Ballarat 9-11 October 2015.

With the support of the City of Ballarat, the Victorian Government and Ballarat Regional Tourism the event will host 200 competitors across 16 age and gender categories from around Australia and Internationally.  Additionally, 600 support people and spectators will also travel to the event. This allows Ballarat to capitalise on its proximity to Australia’s premier climbing region in the Grampians and further enhance Ballarat’s rich sporting history.

A customised wall will be built in Ballarat for the event to ensure a world class competition. Sport Climbing Victoria President Will Hammersla says, “With our Australian athletes achieving such great success internationally, it will be an exceptionally exciting event to see them vying for their home title here in Victoria.” This wall will remain in Ballarat for the use of local climbers and future events such as this one. The wall will also be used for training camps for the Victorian and Australian climbing teams.

Ballarat Mayor Cr John Philips says: “The City of Ballarat is proud to support the sport climbing community and attract this international event to Ballarat.  We look forward to an ongoing relationship with sport climbers of Victoria and Australia.”

Minister for Sport John Eren said he was pleased the Victorian Government could contribute to securing the event.

“The Victorian Government is proud to be providing $10,000 through the Significant Sporting Events Program to assist in securing this event for Ballarat.

We look forward to welcoming all competitors and accompanying friends and family to this historic region of Victoria.”

Sport Climbing Australia President Rob LeBreton says, “Sport Climbing featured in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China and has been short-listed for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Our sport is experiencing massive growth around the world and Ballarat is placing itself at the forefront of the development of Sport Climbing in Australia.”
